Q1. How did you start working on Tsumami-zaiku? (Or did you get involved?)

The first time I made “Tsumami-zaiku” was my daughter’s hair ornament for the coming-of-age ceremony.
There was no information other than the two books borrowed from the library. Making “Tsumami-zaiku” was a challenge of trial and error, but was surprising, fun, and engrossing in all the processes. While then, I had an opportunity to make a headdress with the traditional Japanese “Tsumami-zaiku” for wedding event in Paris. I had the excitement of creating something unprecedented in an unexpected development, and a felt that my world would expand widely.

Q2. What are your commitments to your work and what do you care about?

What I value is being who I am. I started through self-study, so I made original things from the beginning. To keep my originality, I always ask myself, “Is this my favorite color?” or “Do I like this shape?”. I always keep in my mind to make something that no one has ever made before.

Q3. What is the attractiveness of Tsumami-zaiku for you?

From a single white cloth, by coloring, folding into small petals, it becomes a three-dimensional one-wheeled flower. Since basic techniques are simple and can express various things by developing ideas. Also, simply it’s fun creating in my own!

Q4. What do you think about the future possibilities of Tsumami-zaiku?

Social medias such as Instagram have become popular, and anyone can quickly share their work to the world. Along with this, the variations of “Tsumami-zaiku” work have increased, the quality of Tsumami-zaiku techniques has developed, and it is transmitted to the world. This change is remarkable. Based on traditional techniques, I believe that there is still a lot of growth in expression in “Tsumami-zaiku”

Q5. What do you want to make in the future?

From last year, I have been challenging to make some kind of art with “Tsumami-zaiku”.
The technique of delicate Tsumami-zaiku is amazed by foreign countries. By using the technique of “Tsumami-zaiku”, I aim for the work that touches someone`s heart.
